‘Electra’ Trailer: Maria Bakalova Stars In Hala Matar’s ‘Saltburn’-esque Psychological Thriller Next Month

Maria Bakalova earned an Oscar nomination for her work in Borat 2, but ever since she has been determined to branch out and do other things, exactly as she told us in our interview with her a few months ago. Her latest is the Saltburn-esque psychological thriller Electra, which an intriguing new trailer ahead of its release next month.

Electra is the directorial debut by Hala Matar, the first Bahraini woman to helm a feature film in history.  The story centers around two journalists who travel to an isolated Italian villa to interview a famous musician and his partner, only to get caught up in a web of deceit as nothing is as it seems.

Joining Bakalova in the cast are Abigail Cowen, Jack Farthing, and Daryl Wein who co-wrote the screenplay with Matar and Paul Sado. Wein is best known as a filmmaker on Lola Versus, White Rabbit, and How It Ends.

SYNOPSIS: Electra follows two journalists who travel to the lush Italian villa of a famous musician and his partner for an interview, but all is not as it seems and the trip spirals into deceit and deadly betrayals. 

Electra hits select theaters and VOD on May 2nd from Level 33 Entertainment.
