‘Little Brother’: John Cena/Eric Andre Netflix Comedy Lands ‘Ingrid Goes West’ Director

Now that John Cena has turned heel, can he still be funny? Late last year, we learned he’d be starring in the Netflix comedy, Little Brother, alongside comedian Eric Andre, but Cena was a good ol’ babyface at the time. Boy, have things changed. Anyway, that’ll be a problem for director Matt Spicer to deal with, because he’s just signed on.

Deadline reports Spicer will direct Cena and Andre in Little Brother for Netflix. Spicer is best known for the Aubrey Plaza/Elizabeth Olsen dark comedy Ingrid Goes West, which was an indie hit in 2017. Spicer hasn’t directed anything since, but he’s had a hand in the screenplays for the Zoey Deutch comedy Flower, and the Disney film Magic Camp. He’s also done quite a bit of TV stuff.

Little Brother is written by Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, known for their earlier comedies The D-Train and Yes Man. The story centers on a famous real estate agent whose carefully curated world is upended when his eccentric “little brother” unexpectedly reappears.

For me, the most interesting thing about this movie is whether Cena can still be the same hilarious, beloved actor he was before the dramatic heel turn. A lot will probably depend on how things play out for him at WrestleMania in a couple of weeks.
