Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s ‘Tomb Raider’ Series At Amazon Is Reportedly Dead

Here’s an update that may or not be gospel, so take it with a grain of salt for now. That said, it certainly feels right on. A source at PC Gamer (via World of Reel) says Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series is “not going ahead”, while another source says it’s flat out dead. There has yet to be any confirmation from Amazon MGM or Waller-Bridge.

Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner just won the role of Lara Croft last November.

This project has never quite felt like it was on the right track. It’s been tough to come up with a way to make a live-action Tomb Raider relevant, ever since Angelina Jolie popularized the video game with a hit movie in 2001. That film spawned a less-successful 2003 sequel. A 2018 reboot starring Alicia Vikander performed well but didn’t catch on enough to fast track a sequel, leading to the rights being acquired by Amazon Studios.

I think the biggest factor here is the exit of Amazon TV chief Jennifer Salke. Salke struck the $20M exclusive deal with Waller-Bridge that was supposed to lead to movies and TV shows, but so far has produced nothing. With Salke gone, it’s no wonder one of her pet projects could be out the door, too.
