Sydney Sweeney isn’t the first person we think of as a mecha pilot, but if a new report from Jeff Sneider and Deadline is true, it could be in her future. Legendary’s live-action Gundam movie with director Jim Mickle is reportedly keen on the actress starring in the anticipated adaptation.
Sweeney is being eyed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks to star in the live-action Gundam movie. It’s unclear what role she would play, or even which of the many timelines the film will be set in. It’s safe to say that Sweeney would be piloting a giant mecha at some point, otherwise where’s the fun?
Mickle, best known for creating the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, along with directing genre films such as Cold in July and Stake Land, will write and direct. An earlier version had Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Robers attached.
Plot details are under wraps, but we know Gundam is a space opera set in the future and in the middle of a war between the people of Earth and independent colonists who have fled the unstable planet. They fight their battles using mecha, or giant robots called Mobile Suits.
Sweeney is no stranger to genre films having starred recently in Marvel’s Madame Web, as well as the horror film Immaculate. It’s a little bit surprising that she wants to jump back into a franchise so soon after the Marvel/Sony debacle, but then Gundam‘s fan base is global and very loyal.
