Marvel is courting a bit of controversy with the next Spider-Man movie. Last night at Cinemacon in Las Vegas, Tom Holland revealed via video that the title of the next movie is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it will hit theaters on July 31st 2026.
The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who was also on hand for the news. Holland is currently in London shooting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, so he wasn’t there in person. No other information was revealed, and Cretton didn’t address rumors of Sadie Sink’s casting.
The July 2026 date sets Spider-Man: Brand New Day between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Holland has been expected to be part of either one or both of those films. While his name wasn’t on one of the chairs as part of last week’s Doomsday casting announcement, Marvel has made it clear some actors have yet to be revealed.
So what’s the controversy? Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a title taken from the divisive Marvel Comics storyline that followed on the heels of “One More Day”, when Peter Parker strikes a Hellish bargain with Mephisto (basically the Devil) to have his history erased in order to save he life of Aunt May who had been shot by a Kingpin goon. The results of this bargain were felt in “Brand New Day”, including the erasure of Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson, and the forgetting of his identity from everyone who knew him. Basically, it’s similar to Parker’s decision made at the conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home, creating a brand new status quo.
That wasn’t the end of the Spider-Man news, either. Sony also announced that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will finally hit theaters on June 4th 2027, four years after Across the Spider-Verse. The original release date was March 29th 2024, but that couldn’t stick due to numerous delays in the animation process, as well as the unavailability of certain actors.
Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were on hand for the news. The film will once again be led by directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. A small amount of footage was teased, with Miles Morales’ voiceover saying “You can’t ask me… not to save my father.” In some ways, Miles is being forced to make some of the same tough decisions that the live-action Peter Parker had to make. Wearing the mask was never supposed to be easy, right?
