Keanu Reeves has been attempting to adapt his self-created comic book, BRZRKR, since it was first published in 2021. A year later, Reeves was contemplating directing the film himself, which would’ve made it his sophomore effort after 2013’s still-excellent Man of Tai Chi. But it seems Reeves has given up on this idea, as THR reports Justin Lin will bring the Netflix project to life.
Lin will direct BRZRKR for Netflix, based on Reeves’ comic that he created with writer Matt Kindt and artist Ron Garney. The series follows the immortal warrior Berzerker as he battles throughout the ages. The BOOM! Studios comic has led to multiple spinoffs, and along with a live-action movie there’s a two-season anime series in development.
This will be Lin’s return to blockbuster filmmaking. He’s best known for his directing multiple films in the Fast & Furious franchise, including F9 in 2021. He also directed Star Trek Beyond in 2016. His most recent film, Last Days, a drama based on the fate of missionary John Allen Chau, debuted at Sundance earlier this year.
BRZRKR will have a script by Mattson Tomlin, best known for co-writing The Batman and the upcoming sequel. He also directed the sci-fi film Mother/Android, and led Netflix’s Terminator Zero anime series.
Here’s the BRZRKR synopsis provided by Netflix:
“BRZRKR” is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000-year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.
