‘Ash’ Interview: Eiza González And Aaron Paul Talk Flying Lotus’ Enigmatic Sci-Fi Horror

I used to say that horror wasn’t really my bag, but that has changed over the years. In particular, I’ve become a huge fan of sci-fi horrors set in deep space, films such as Sunshine and Event Horizon. There’s a good new one coming out this week; Ash, directed by multi-talented filmmaker and musician Flying Lotus. The film stars Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais, Beulah Koale, Kate Elliott, and FlyLo himself.

In Ash, González stars as Riya, a lone astronaut on a faraway planet, having just woken up with no memory of how she got there. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that her crewmates and dear friends are all dead, with no idea how it happened. Paul plays Brion, her alleged crewmate who arrives and tries to help discover the truth.

The film takes you on quite a head trip, with FlyLo crafting a paranoid atmosphere with trippy visuals and composing a mind-bending score. This one was a lot of fun.

I had the chance to speak with Eiza González and Aaron Paul about Ash. Both actors talked about working with FlyLo and his unique vision. They also talked about getting wrapped up in the enigmatic story, sci-fi horror influences, Paul’s time on Westworld, and more.

Ash opens in theaters tomorrow, March 21st. You can check out the interview below and my review here.
