‘Lanterns’ First Look: Aaron Pierre And Kyle Chandler As The DCU’s Green Lanterns

James Gunn and DC Studios could use a bit of good news, following admissions that a bunch of their projects are on the backburner. So the timing is perfect for the start of production on Lanterns, the anticipated Green Lantern series headed to MAX in 2026. Today brings the first look at the superhero show and its two stars, Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. Are they rocking vibrant green suits and emerald power rings? Well, yes to the latter, but you’d be hard-pressed to notice.

The debut image from Lanterns looks like it could’ve come from an episode of True Detective. It shows Pierre as John Stewart and Chandler as Hal Jordan, Green Lanterns on an earthbound investigation into a murder. If you look at Chandler’s right hand you can see his power ring, appearing pretty normal. We know that it’s not.

“Excited that #Lanterns is now in production,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “[It’s] DC Studios’ new show for HBO and Max, from creators Chris Mundy, @damonlindelof , & @tomking_tk , starring Kyle Chandler & @aaron_pierre1, is something really special.”

The True Detective similarity might not be a coincidence as Mundy wrote for the hit HBO cop series. It explains the gritty, grounded nature of the approach favored by Mundy and fellow creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King.

Also in the cast are Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen.
