Anticipation to return to Matt Reeves’ Gotham City is higher than ever after the first season of Penguin. Unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait a while longer for The Batman II. Warner Bros. has pushed back the anticipated Bat-sequel a full year to October 1st 2027. Ouch. By the time we see Robert Pattinson back in the cape and cowl it will have been more than five years since The Batman debuted in March 2022.
So what’s the deal? According to Deadline, production wasn’t set to begin until late 2025, and with a heavy VFX sequel they didn’t want to rush things just to hit a target date. The Batman was a powerhouse, earning $772M at at time when theaters were just starting to recover from the pandemic shutdowns. You can see why Reeves and the studio want to be protective and make sure they get the next one right.
This was just one of a handful of movies by Warner Bros., including another Pattinson flick. Taking The Batman II‘s former slot on October 2nd 2026 is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s untitled IMAX film starring Tom Cruise. That film also stars Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Riz Ahmed. Cruise plays a powerful billionaire who unleashes a deadly disaster and frantically tries to prove to the world he’s humanity’s savior.
Meanwhile, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite follow-up, the sci-fi film Mickey 17, has traded spots with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Pattinson stars in Mickey 17 which has been moved up to March 7th 2025. It follows a “disposal” employee who dies repeatedly only to be cloned with his memories mostly intact so as to continue his dangerous mission colonizing an ice planet.
Sinners, which just released a new teaser this week, now opens on April 18th 2025. The film finds Coogler directing Michael B. Jordan for the fourth time. Jordan takes on dual roles as twin brothers Elijah and Elias who return home to start over, only to find that something sinister is waiting for them. Something sinister like vampires. Delroy Lindo, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller, Lola Kirke, and Jack O’Connell co-star.
