It only took one movie for Robert Eggers to be one of those must-see filmmakers. The Witch established him as one of the most exciting directors around, especially in the realm of horror with The Witch, The Lighthouse, and now Nosferatu. A deeply-held passion project for Eggers, Nosferatu (review here) is essentially a gothic remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film that starred Max Shreck, itself an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But this is Eggers we’re talking about here, and of course he’s going to put his own spin on it.
While you can see Eggers’ loving attention to every ominous detail, it was his choice of actors who gave Nosferatu its dark heart. Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Eggers favorite Willem Dafoe lead the cast, each bringing something beautiful, frightful, wicked, and passionate to the year’s best vampire movie.
I had a chance to talk with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp about Nosferatu, what it was like working with Eggers, and how they felt the first time they saw Skarsgard as the obsessed and bloodthirsty Count Orlok.
This was a fun interview, and I hope you’ll check it out and follow us on YouTube! Nosferatu is open in theaters now!
