I don’t think there’s any real debate about it: Godzilla Minus One is the best Godzilla movie ever. The success of the kaiju flick is going to lead to a bunch of imitators, because that’s just how Hollywood works. Could one of the copycats come from Marvel Studios, though? There’s reason to speculate based on what director Takashi Yamazaki had to say in a recent interview.
Yamazaki spoke at the Tokyo International Film Festival to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, and he confirmed a meeting with Marvel chief Kevin Feige. What about? Maybe Yamakazi directing a future MCU movie?
Here’s the excerpt taken from VirtualGodzilla…
When asked by announcer Shinsuke Kasai, who appeared on stage wearing a “Operation Kaishin” T-shirt that day, “I heard that Operation Kaishin is popular with foreigners,” he admitted, “Yes, they seem to like that kind of down-to-earth fighting style.” He also shared some surprising information, saying, “The president of Marvel told me, ‘Wadatsumi!’ (laughs). ‘Wadatsumi, good.'”
“The president of Marvel” is thought to refer to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and Director Takashi Yamazaki continued, “He told me, ‘We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.’ I think it’s just lip service.” He also revealed that he received a “great offer” from overseas, but turned it down in order to film a new Godzilla movie, although he couldn’t reveal the details.
So was that offer from Marvel? We might not ever know, but expect that when Yamazaki wraps up the newly-announced Godzilla Minus One sequel he’ll be a hot commodity around Hollywood.
