And the mess that is Lucasfilm continues. It was only a week ago that we learned of a new trilogy of movies led by Simon Kinberg that would center on Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. This was odd because we knew Rey would feature in another movie for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, about the building of a new Jedi Academy. Well, the situation just got weirder because the latter film is now off of the schedule.
Disney has announced the Star Wars movie set for December 18th 2026, largely believed to be the Obaid-Chinoy movie, has been pulled from the schedule. This is obviously a bad sign for a film that has struggled to get moving. Multiple writers are rumored to have taken a stab at it and Lucasfilm has yet to find one they are comfortable moving ahead with.
That leaves only The Mandalorian & Grogu for May 22nd 2026. The next Star Wars film after that is in December 2027. What is it? Your guess is as good as mine. It could be a lot of things, and that’s part of the problem.
At this point, it’s possible Lucasfilm ditches Obaid-Chinoy’s movie altogether and goes ahead with Kinberg’s. Or maybe they find a way to combine the two ideas?
I took some heat online for suggesting that Kathleen Kennedy should’ve been fired from Lucasfilm by now, and this doesn’t change my mind. The Star Wars franchise is a mess right now and Kennedy can’t find a way to fix it. You can bet Disney shareholders are unhappy the last movie on the big screen was in 2019. That’s a long time without one of their biggest cash cows.
