Kevin Smith Says A ‘Dogma’ Sequel Is In The Works; “I Found A Way In”

Earlier this month, Kevin Smith regained the rights to his brilliant 1999 religious comedy Dogma, just in time to re-release it into theaters and home video for the 25th anniversary. And now that he’s had this huge victory, Smith is going one step further with plans for a sequel. Rejoice!

Smith revealed the news recently at Vulture Festival (via Deadline) that he’s beginning to write a sequel to Dogma, whether fans like it or not.

“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t fucking touch it. You’ll ruin it,’” said Smith. “And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m fucking tickled. I found a way in.”

Smith elaborated on social media, saying there’s no script yet and he hasn’t even spoken to the previous film’s key stars, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, about a possible return…

“To be fair, I said I started writing a sequel in my head on Thursday night,” Smith posted. “So a Dogma sequel script is eventually happening… but that doesn’t mean a movie is getting made necessarily. And while I plan to include Bartleby and Loki, I’ve not spoken to Ben or Matt about it yet.”

“Expect a cameo from them — more than a fucking cameo,” he said. “The only way we get a ‘Dogma’ sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”

Dogma starred Affleck and Damon as Bartleby and Loki, angels kicked out of Heaven but have found a loophole to get back in God’s good graces. However, doing so would prove God fallible and possibly destroy the world. The film also starred Chris Rock, Linda Fiorentino, the late Alan Rickman, Alanis Morissette (as God), Salma Hayek, and of course Smith and Jason Mewes as resident stoners Jay & Silent Bob.

If I had to rank my favorite Kevin Smith movies, Dogma would be in the top 3 or 4. I’m one of those who kinda wishes he’d steer clear of messing with a movie I think is pretty damn perfect, but I also trust that Smith wouldn’t do it if he thought it would suck.

What do you think? Do you want to see a Dogma sequel?
