Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks have been trying to get a live-action Gundam movie off the ground for years. One of the most popular franchises in the world, Gundam very nearly happened with Netflix and Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. But that plan fell through, and now it’s happening with another impressive filmmaker aboard.
Deadline reports Sweet Tooth creator Jim Mickle will write and direct a live-action Gundam movie. Mickle’s credentials run deep, and he’s tackled many different genre. Mickle has leaned towards adaptations of author Joe R. Lansdale’s crime stories, such as the film Cold in July and the series Hap & Leonard. He also directed the horror films Stake Land and We Are What We Are, and sci-fi film In the Shadow of the Moon.
Plot details are under wraps, but we know Gundam is a space opera set in the future and in the middle of a war between the people of Earth and independent colonists who have fled the unstable planet. They fight their battles using mecha, or giant robots called Mobile Suits.
Many describe Gundam as the Star Wars of anime. Expect Legendary and Bandai Namco to treat this film like a potentially massive long-running cash cow.
