‘The Amateur’ Trailer: Rami Malek Is Out For Payback In James Hawes’ CIA Thriller

After a handful of supporting turns, Oscar winner Rami Malek is back in leading man territory with the CIA thriller, The Amateur. Based on the Robert Littell novel, the film has been in the works for almost two decades, with Hugh Jackman once attached to the central role.  But after years in development Hell, the film got back on track last year with Malek and director James Hawes.

As seen in the new trailer, The Amateur stars Malek as a CIA analyst whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Out for vengeance, he tries to get sent into the field but when turned down by his bosses, he just decides to get payback in his own way.

Joining Malek in the cast are Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne.

Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down) and Gary Spinelli (American Made) wrote the screenplay. Hawes is best known for his TV work on Slow Horses and Snowpiercer. This marks his sophomore big-screen effort after the historical drama One Life.

20th Century Studios opens The Amateur in theaters on April 11th 2025.
