A24 knows they might have a big hit on their hands with Heretic. What makes this one any different from another horror flick? Well, it’s got Hugh Grant playing the creepiest character he’s played since he was an Oompa Loompa in Wonka. And the chance to see Grant go to deadly lengths to test another’s faith is going to be a big draw for the film when it opens next month.
Heretic is the latest film from A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. They’ve since directed the slasher film Haunt and last year’s Adam Driver dino-dud 65.
Grant stars as the mysterious Mr. Reed, who seems nice and neighborly when approached by two Mormon missionaries played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. But their attempts to convert him go awry when he puts them through a dangerous fight for their lives and their faith.
The film debuted at TIFF to solid reviews, leading to it being moved up a week to November 8th.
SYNOPSIS: “Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
