‘Matchbox’: John Cena To Star In Mattel Car Toyline Movie From ‘Extraction’ Director Sam Hargrave

You hear that John Cena will team with Extraction director Sam Hargrave on a new movie, the assumption is it’ll be another action flick. I mean, how could these two not do one together? Well, that’s actually not what’s happening. Instead, Cena will star in Matchbox, a film that Hargrave will direct based on the Mattel car toy line.

Matchbox is inspired by the iconic Mattel toy cars invented in 1953 and designed to resemble real-world vehicles down to the tiniest detail. The film will have a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and Jonathan Tropper (This Is Where I Leave You).

The film was acquired by Apple Original Films, and will develop the live-action film with Skydance and Mattel Films.

It’s unclear what the nature of the Matchbox story will be. My first thought is the 2017 film Monster Trucks, but I’m sure it’ll end up resembling Fast & the Furious, a franchise Cena was briefly a part of.

Cena was last seen in the Prime Video action-comedy Jackpot. He’ll soon reprise his title role in season two of Peacemaker for DC Studios and James Gunn. Hargrave is the former stuntman who directed Chris Hemsworth in Extraction, and then returned to helm the sequel in 2023. [Deadline]
