‘Lanterns’: Josh Brolin, Ewan McGregor, And Matthew McConaughey Rumored For Hal Jordan Role

Attempts to bring Green Lantern to the small screen were in the works as part of the DCEU, but James Gunn has a similar idea as part of DC Studios’ new DCU. The HBO series Lanterns will bring the Green Lantern Corps back into live-action glory (for the first time since the disastrous 2011 Green Lantern movie), and multiple actors are said to be in the running to play the ultimate GL himself, Hal Jordan.

According to Nexus Point News, Dune actor Josh Brolin is in the running to play Hal Jordan in Lanterns. Jeff Sneider chimes in with two more names reportedly in contention; Ewan McGregor and most surprisingly, Matthew McConaughey. Sneider says McGregor and McConaughey are next on the list should Brolin decline, which he very well might. The McConaughey rumor is interesting because Sneider says the show will be modeled after True Detective, a show that McConaughey led in the first and best season.

Let’s not forget that Brolin already has some DC experience, having played Jonah Hex in the awful 2010 movie.

Brolin, McGregor, and McConaughey are all in their 50s, so the series is clearly looking to introduce an older version of Hal Jordan. A younger actor is being sought to play John Stewart, with Damson Idris (Outside the Wire) and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) popular choices on social media.

Gunn’s pal Nathan Fillion is already set to play the greatest GL of them all, Guy Gardner, in the upcoming Superman film in 2025. He is expected to also reprise the role in Lanterns.
