Sigourney Weaver Confirms ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Role, Would Consider Return As Ellen Ripley

Sigourney Weaver has been part of some of the biggest sci-fi and fantasy franchises. Alien, Avatar, Ghostbusters, and she even had a short stint in the MCU as part of Netflix’s The Defenders. It’s been long overdue for her to join the Galaxy Far Far Away, but it’s now been confirmed her role in The Mandalorian & Grogu, first teased back in May.

Weaver confirmed she’d be joining the Star Wars universe in an interview with Deadline, but offered no info on her role.

“I’m playing a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu [which will be directed by Jon Favreau]. I got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day. I’m filming that before I go to London for The Tempest at the end of the year.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu brings the storylines from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s hit series The Mandalorian to the big screen. It’s unclear what Weaver’s part will be, but if she turned out to be a villain it’s doubtful anyone would be surprised. She’s very good at playing very bad.

Filming is expected to begin soon with a planned release on May 22nd 2026.

Weaver also talked about the possibility of returning to the iconic role of Ellen Ripley. With the Alien franchise seemingly reborn with Alien: Romulus, a film set firmly in the Alien and Aliens time period, might she come back?

“I feel like she’s never far away from me, but on the other hand I have yet to read a script that said “you have got to do this.” So for me, she is in this other dimension, safe from the Alien for the time being. I don’t really think about it, but you know, it’s not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material.

“How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I’m also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest.”

So that’s definitely not a “no”, but it doesn’t seem likely unless somebody comes up with an awesome reason for Ripley to get back into the action.
