‘Megalopolis’ Trailer: Francis Ford Coppola’s Passion Project Finally Arrives Next Month

The name Francis Ford Coppola should be mentioned in the same breath as Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. But unlike them, Coppola hasn’t had a major film in nearly 30 years and is still known mostly for the work he did in the ’70s with The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. That could be about to change with the release of his longtime passion project, Megalopolis, a sprawling sci-fi epic arriving next month.

After a huge personal investment, Coppola got Megalopolis off the ground with a world premiere at Cannes. After securing distribution with Lionsgate and IMAX, the film will hit theaters on September 27th.

The huge ensemble cast includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.

This is the biggest cast Coppola has ever worked with, and with star power like this Megalopolis could have the biggest box office of his career.

Here’s the synopsis: Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.
