Box Office: A Tough Week for New Releases as ‘Inside Out 2’ Continues Putting Up Pre-COVID Numbers

  1. Inside Out 2 (review)- $100M/$355M

I can’t remember the last time a movie scored a nine digit take on its second weekend, but I’m sure it wasn’t in the 2020’s. Inside Out 2 is certainly doing its part to save summer box office numbers but it can’t complete that quest alone.

2. Bad Boys: Ride or Die– $18.7M/$146.9M

Proving the box office take of one William Smith, the man who can’t even be slowed by the slap heard ’round the world, Bad Boys: Ride or Die the fourth entry in the series, holds its spot at #2 and brings the film just shy of $150M

3. The Bikeriders (review)- $10M

Ooof, if this is how one of the most anticipated films of the summer is performing what hope is there for everyone else? Look, I get that R-Rated gangster (for lack of a better term) movies don’t score in the 100’s on their first week but this is C-Level Blumhouse horror territory. I’m going to hold out for a miracle and hope that word of mouth gets people out for this one. We keep this up we’ll never have an original IP on the big screen again.

4. The Garfield Movie– $3.6M/$85.1M

5. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes– $3.6M/$164.3M

6. IF– $2.7M/$106.6M

7. The Exorcism (review) – $2.4M

If The Bikeriders was considered underperforming, whatever The Exorcism just did is downright embarrassing. With $2.4M made on 2240 theaters, that makes an average of $1108/theater. If you assume an avg ticket price of $12, that’s 92 tickets sold for the entire weekend. Three days, three shows a day makes for 10 tickets sold per showing……10.

8. Thelma (review)– $2.2M

9. The Watchers– $1.9M/$17.7M

10. GHOST: Rite Here Rite Now – $1.5M/$2.6M
