‘Project Hail Mary’: Sandra Hüller Joins Ryan Gosling In Lord & Miller’s Astronaut Film

An incredible year for Sandra Hüller is only getting better. Following her performances in The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall, both Best Picture Oscar nominees, and her Oscar-nominated performance in the latter, Hüller has landed a role opposite Ryan Gosling in the upcoming sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary. Prior to this, Hüller broke out with her performance in another acclaimed drama, Toni Erdmann.

This could be the film that makes Hüller a household name, as it’s widely expected to be a huge project. The first movie directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller since 22 Jump Street in 2014 (!!!), Project Hail Mary is based on the book by The Martian author Andy Weir, and adapted by Drew Goddard. The story centers on Middle School teacher and molecular biologist Ryland Grace who wakes up from a coma with amnesia aboard a space shuttle. With the help of an extraterrestrial, Ryland begins to remember that he was sent on a planet-saving mission.

While Hüller’s role is unclear, she seems like a perfect fit for Eva Stratt, the Dutch authority figure who takes charge of Project Hail Mary. She’s one of the story’s key figures, a strong personality right up there with Ryland.

First announced four years ago, Project Hail Mary finally seems to be picking up steam. There are a lot of characters that need to be set, so expect more casting news to come. The film opens in theaters on March 20th, 2026.[Deadline]
