Last year was an amazing one for action movies, and John Wick: Chapter 4 was top of the list. Part of what made it so great is Keanu Reeves sharing the screen with one of the biggest action stars in the world, Donnie Yen, who played the blind assassin Caine. As the John Wick franchise expands, Caine is now getting his own spinoff feature film.
Lionsgate announced today that Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Caine. Plot details are unknown at this point, but it’s expected to follow Caine’s story now that he’s been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The script will be written by Robert Askins, known for his Tony-nominated play Hand to God and his work on Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and AMC’s The Son. Franchise director and co-creator Chad Stahelski will oversee the project as part of the John Wick franchise’s continued expansion which was part of a deal he struck with Lionsgate. At this point no director is attached. Production begins in Hong Kong next year.
“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience,” said Yen. “The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
Coming up next for the John Wick universe is Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, which opens on June 6th and will feature a cameo by Reeves. John Wick 5 is also happening but will likely be a long way off.
