The trailer that so many of us have been waiting the better part of 40 years for finally dropped today. Tim Burton’s iconic creation, the ghost with the most, Beetlejuice has threatened his return since the 80s but the closest we got was a, decidedly awesome, cartoon series. Rumors would abound for years about “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian”, the supposed planned sequel title. Finally, in the last few years things started to come together and now, with just 6 short months until the film’s release we have our first look via the official trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The trailer opens on a funeral, undoubtedly for the only missing member of the Dietz family, patriarch Charles Dietz (played by disgusting human Jeffery Jones in the original). As the camera pans from Lydia (Winona Ryder), past Astrid (newcomer to the series, Jenna Ortega) and comes to a halt on Delia (the eternal Catherine O’Hara), you begin to get the distinct impression that this group managed to do the impossible and recapture the magic of the original film.
While the trailer is light on details, it’s heavy on nostalgia lingering on shots of the attic and town model to the covered bridge where the story all began. Still no indication that Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin will make a return (they’re nowhere to be found in the cast list either), but let’s get real…a great Beetlejuice movie really only needs one person, Michael Keaton. Keaton bides his time and doesn’t make an appearance until the closing shots of the clip but damn it if he doesn’t still have it. The originator of the stripped suit (sorry Robin Thicke, we know who wore it better) may look a little worse for wear but Keaton, in the 3 seconds of screen time he has, manages to guarantee that he still has the energy required for the role
