Zellner Bros.’ Sundance Classic ‘Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter’ Returning To Theaters For 10th Anniversary

I’ve had a lot of people asking me about the Zellner Bros.’ upcoming film, Sasquatch Sunset, which I saw last month at Sundance. And I always tell them that it’s probably not what you think it is…it’s much weirder, but also kinda serene and distant. My suggestion is always that you check out the other Zellner movies first, and that most definitely include’s Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, which I’m flabbergasted to realize is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

As such, Sasquatch Sunset‘s distributor Bleecker Street is re-releasing Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter back into select theaters beginning March 22nd, and then on-demand on April 2nd. The film had not been available on streaming for years.

Sasquatch Sunset (review here) will then open in theaters on April 12th.

Described in my review as an “offbeat and rewarding oddity”, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter stars the always-great Rinko Kikuchi as a misfit Tokyo office worker who comes to believe that the bag of money seen in the movie Fargo is real, and so she sets out to Minnesota to find it. Along the way she experiences crazy culture clash, but also encounters her share of oddball characters. The idea sprang from an old urban legend about a woman who went searching for that same satchel of cash.

I’m supremely happy about this and can’t wait to see the movie again on the big screen, as I haven’t since 2014. I can’t recommend it highly enough, so if it’s in your town go check it out for yourself!

You can watch me, Tim Gordon, and Robert Aubry Davis discuss the film on an episode of WETA Around Town from 2014!
