Readers of this site know that hitman thrillers are top of my favorite list, and there’s a reason for it. There are so many different stories that can be told from the perspective of a contract killer, and fortunately, the genre has found storytellers willing to make some interesting choices. In the case of Knox Goes Away, the killer in question has a degenerative brain disorder, which makes his quest for redemption more vital than ever.
The film is directed by and stars Michael Keaton, and if you’re surprised, don’t be. Keaton has been director before, but it’s been a while. His directorial debut was 2009’s The Merry Gentleman, and this is his first since then.
In Knox Goes Away, Keaton is joined by Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, Suzy Nakamura, and Joanna Kulig.
Here’s the synopsis: Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton directs and stars in this unpredictable thriller as John Knox, a hitman attempting to make amends before his recently discovered dementia takes over. Aided by a trusted friend (Academy Award® winner Al Pacino) with his own shady past, Knox races against the police — and his own rapidly deteriorating mind — to save his estranged son (James Marsden) from a vengeance-fueled mistake and “cash out” before it’s too late. Also starring Oscar® winners Ray McKinnon and Marcia Gay Harden.
Knox Goes Away opens in theaters on March 15th.
