When Marvel finds a creator they work well with, they don’t make a secret about it. Suddenly, that filmmaker gets flooded with projects of increasing importance. Such is the case with writer Michael Waldron, who is making the leap from Loki season two and into the director-less Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Waldron boards the fifth Avengers movie at an interesting time. Destin Daniel Cretton recently exited as director, amidst speculation that it will no longer center on Kang and will focus on a different villain. It could be that Waldron, who is coming in to replace writer Jeff Loveness, has been hired to cement that change in direction. As we’ve been saying for a while now, look for a title change to happen at some point.
This is the latest high-profile Marvel project for Waldron. He took his Rick & Morty experience and brought it to the MCU, creating Loki and penning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not only that, but he’s already writing Avengers: Secret Wars, the film that follows The Kang Dynasty so it makes sense to have him on both as their storylines are connected. It’s similar to what Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely did on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame for the Russo Brothers.
The only question left is who will direct Waldron’s screenplay? Rumors are that Marvel wants a single director to helm both movies, with Sam Raimi among a list of favorites.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently set for May 1st 2026, with Secret Wars coming on May 7th 2027. [Deadline]
