Dracula may be in theaters this weekend in the dark comedy Renfield, but the vampire king will be back again this summer in a very different kind of film. The Last Voyage of the Demeter is based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log”, in Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, Dracula.
In Stoker’s original story, the Demeter is a Russian ship carrying Dracula from Transylvania to England. The crew is completely unaware that they have the vampire aboard, until the crew start disappearing one-by-one, and the ship’s captain begins believing that they are cursed by an evil force.
The film adaptation is directed by Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal (Trollhunter), and stars David Dastmalchian, Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, C’mon C’mon‘s Woody Norman, and Javier Botet as Dracula. The film also features Jon Jon Briones, Deadpool‘s Stefan Kapicic, and Nikolai Nikolaeff.
The trailer shows how the story will be expanded by focusing on the fear and paranoia that takes over the ship’s crew as they are stalked in the night.
It’s been a long journey for the film, which was initially penned in 2002 and then sat in limbo for years. At one point, Viggo Mortensen, Noomi Rapace, and Ben Kingsley were involved.
The wait is nearly over, though. The Last Voyage of the Demeter opens on August 11th.
