Harrison Ford Had All Of The Old Man Jokes Removed From ‘Indiana Jones 5’

Harrison Ford ain’t getting any younger. Not that’s stopping him or anything. At the age of 80 he’s busier than ever, starring in Yellowstone spinoff 1923, the Apple series Shrinking, and joining the MCU for Captain America: New World Order. Coming up this summer is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and let’s be honest, we all expected that it would be full up to Indy’s hat with “old person” humor. Well, think again.

Speaking with THR on a number of different subjects, Ford talked about Dial of Destiny and what fans can look forward to. Well, they can look forward to there not being any jokes about Indy’s age, but Ford made sure they were all taken out. Seriously.

“In [‘Dial of Destiny’] there were a lot of old jokes in the script. We took them all out,” explained Ford. “There is a moment where he observes himself in this situation and says, ‘What the fuck am I doing in here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about the story.’ I want to see circumstances in which the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the nose with highlights pointed out to them. I’d rather create behavior that is the joke of age rather than talk about it.”

To be fair, they were making jokes about Indy being too old in Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and that was fifteen years ago. Why do it again now? The only thing it would accomplish is reminding the audience that Ford is past his prime, when you want them to be swept up in the adventure.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opens on June 30th.
