The Uncanny Valley Hits A New Level of Terrifying In The Latest Trailer for ‘M3GAN’

A little known byproduct of being born in the early 80s and having older siblings is an unhealthy fear of dolls thanks to Child’s Play. I have a feeling that’s going to be replicated for the generation born at the beginning of this decade thanks to M3GAN, the new horror film from James Wan.

The premise seems to be fairly similar to the Aubrey Plaza lead Child’s Play remake that came out just a bit ago, hi-tech doll who is programmed (by the beautiful Allison Williams no less) to be a friend but ends up with the most unfortunate type of computer virus, one that actually kills. So the plot doesn’t seem to be anything ground-breaking but what DOES set this flick apart, it would seem, is just how damn realistic the doll in question is.

Megan appears, at times, to be a little person (or a young gymnast) with a doll mask…it’s the body and fluidity of movement that makes it disturbing. The face is obviously not real but the rest of it…I don’t know it just messes with you. We got the first trailer about a month ago and we don’t get much new here, just more of a guarantee that this film is going to keep some people up at night. If you need to be reassured of that just fast forward the trailer below to the 1:00 mark, where Megan goes into a full feral gallop after a little boy in the woods.

There’s one thing that’s still to be determined and that’s whether or not this movie will end up with intentional scares or unintentional laughs. The line between the two is surprisingly thing and, honestly, it could go either way at this point. I mean, it’s hard not to get some unintentional laughs when you are showing a 3′ doll blasting a senior citizen with a pressure washer.
