Disney has so many remakes of their classic films that they can’t even go a day from releasing one before revealing another. On the same day that Pinocchio was released onto Disney+, the first teaser for the highly-anticipated remake of The Little Mermaid starring pop singer Halle Bailey. This has been one of the biggest question marks as Disney attempts a new version of their 1989 classic that won two Oscars and continues to be beloved by millions.
The brief footage offers little dialogue but does take us under the sea to reveal the underwater beauty of the film. Bailey also teases us with her rendition of “Part of Your World”, and it’s clear why she was right for the role, toxic fandom be damned.
Also in the film are Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian The Crab, Jacob Tremblay voices Flounder, Awkwafina voices Scuttle, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and most interesting is Melissa McCarthy as the evil Ursula.
When in need of a big musical hit, Disney knows to turn to Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall. He’s yet to let them down.
The Little Mermaid opens on May 26th 2023.
A rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which is forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.
