A standout film at both Cannes and Sundance, Eva Husson’s Mothering Sunday promises to take viewers on a whirlwind, sensual period romance. The cast is tremendous from top to bottom, with Odessa Young as a post-WWI housemaid in England, Josh O’Connor as her secret lover, and Colin Firth and Olivia Colman as her employers. On the rare occasion that she has been left alone, the maid decides to meet her lover before he leaves to marry another woman for a prearranged marriage.
Also in the cast are Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Patsy Ferran, Emma D’Arcy, and Glenda Jackson. Again, from top to bottom this is a great group that Husson has put together. The film marks Husson’s followup to the underrated 2018 war drama Girls of the Sun.
