Netflix has decided to move ahead with a season 4 for surprise hit Cobra Kai. Is there a cooler comeback story then what’s happened with Cobra Kai in the last four years? Like Daniel-san himself, the unlikely champion has risen to the top. The unlikely series, which follows up on the characters from The Karate Kid 30-some years after the events of the original film, started out on YouTube Red to critical acclaim and some popularity. Then, after 2 seasons it was purchased by Netflix and commissioned for a season 3 which is due out this January. Almost immediately that modicum of popularity turned into tidal wave of new viewers resulting in the series sitting in Netflix’s top 10 for a record breaking amount of time. A real advertisement for Netflix’s reach over it’s competitors one thing was very clear, people wanted more from the Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai dojo’s.
Thankfully Netflix, who’s been famous for cutting series at the third season mark, has given the order for a fourth season. Of course, Cobra Kai, being a transplant to the network Netflix theoretically will take it to at least season 5 if popularity continues. Everyone else should take note, when you’re digging into nostalgia it’s not enough to just reference you have to expand. The beautiful thing about the show is how it turns the tables on what you thought about Johnny Lawrence (ultimate 80s bad boy Willam Zabka), not only showing how poorly his life has turned out but also proving that he’s not actually the bad guy we thought he was….not everything is as it seems.
Cobra Kai season 3 premieres on Netflix January 8th, 2021. Seasons 1 & 2 are available now!
