‘Captain Marvel’ First Look: Brie Larson Is Ready To Take On Thanos

While the Earth’s mightiest heroes were busy wafting in the wind after their fight with Thanos, Avengers: Infinity War was capping off with a teaser for the upcoming debut of Brie Larson in Captain Marvel. Her insignia flashed across Nick Fury’s pager (Pager?? What’s a pager, millions of kids thought to themselves.) and if you’re up on your Marvel lore then you probably geeked out at the sight of it. While numerous set images of Larson all suited up have already hit the web, including a controversial one in a greenish costume, the first official look at her as Captain Marvel is here now.

Larson and EW teased the first image’s release last night, and they didn’t disappoint. She’s looking superheroic as the first female Marvel hero to earn a solo movie, and lookit that; the colors are all normal as they should be with reds, blues, and golds.

Anna Boden, who officially becomes Marvel’s first female director (she’s co-directing with partner Ryan Fleck), had this to say…

“This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection.  But what makes her special is just how human she is. She’s funny, but doesn’t always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.”

Captain Marvel is a prequel set in the 1990s, and follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who becomes one of the most powerful heroes in the universe after her DNA is bonded with that of an alien Kree. The film must not only introduce her to the MCU, but also explain where she’s been for the last 30 years, and why she hasn’t gotten involved in all the chaos since the Avengers were founded. She’s not encased in ice, is she?  Probably not.

The film co-stars plenty of returning faces, like a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, plus Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Hounsou as Korath. Jude Law plays the original Captain Marvel aka Mar-Vell, with Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, plus roles for Ben Mendelsohn, Annette Bening, Colin Ford, Robert Kazinsky, and McKenna Grace.

Captain Marvel opens on March 8th 2019.

Brie Larson Is Teasing Our First Look At ‘Captain Marvel’ Tomorrow

Now that Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man & the Wasp are in the rear view mirror, Marvel is ready to turn the page towards their next big thing. We’d heard the first promos for Captain Marvel might start dropping in early fall, and right on schedule star Brie Larson is teasing the first official look tomorrow!

Doubtful we’ll get a trailer just yet, but maybe the first official image of Larson suited up as Carol Danvers? Can we also get Jude Law as Mar-Vell, please?

What we know is that the film is set in the ’90s and follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers whose DNA is bonded with that of an alien, giving her amazing superhuman powers. The film is set in the 1990s and will feature a digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, plus McKenna Grace, Annette Bening, Colin Ford, and Ben Mendelsohn in unspecified roles.

Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th 2019, directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.

Chance The Rapper’s ‘Slice’ Is Hitting Theaters Next Week For One Night Only

A24 is only willing to offer up their Chance the Rapper-led horror movie Slice to a small slice of the country, not the whole pie. In a strange move, the distributor will launch its world premiere of the film next week in Chicago, but only for a single day.

Slice will make its world premiere at a special screening at the Arclight Cinemas Chicago on September 10th 2018, followed by a Q&A with Chance the Rapper, co-stars Zazie Beetz, Paul Scheer, Rae Gray, and director Austin Vesely. If you can’t make it to Chi-Town for the event, you can always buy tickets to a live simulcast held in 20 major cities throughout the country. For a list of theaters you can go to Slice.Movie. Here in the DMV you can check the film out at the Regal Majestic in Silver Spring, MD.

This is an odd release strategy by A24, or at least it looks that way on the surface. Slice was supposed to open last year after the mysterious first teaser dropped. Then it was nearly a full year later that the second full trailer hit, and it was still hard to tell exactly what we were looking at. The story follows a pair of pizza delivery drivers, one hiding a supernatural secret, trying to survive a serial killer that has targeted other delivery boys. It promises lots of over-the-top violence and comedy, but looks pretty sloppy and stitched together.

Maybe A24 know more than we do, and this is a brilliant plan to drum up some word-of-mouth buzz. We’ll find out soon enough. Slice currently does not have a wide theatrical release date.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Will Bring Back Robin Wright As General Antiope

As we’ve learned by the apparent return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor for Wonder Woman 1984, being dead doesn’t preclude a character from returning for the sequel. The latest to make a comeback is Robin Wright’s badass warrior Antiope, who perished saving Diana (Gal Gadot) in the first film.

Unlike Steve Trevor, this won’t be a return to the land of the living for Antiope. A recent Porter profile confirmed Wright will be shooting flashback scenes in Spain featuring the fallen Amazonian general, joined by Connie Nielsen as Themysciran queen Hippolyta.

We don’t have any details on what the scene entails, but something tells me it will tie into the origin of the movie’s villain, Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig.  Whatever the case, it’s a good move because Antiope was such a formidable presence in the first movie, and her death had a profound impact on Diana that carried on throughout. Wright was incredible in the role, as well, and any chance to see her reprise it will be worth it, even if we only get a few minutes.

Wonder Woman 1984 opens November 1st 2019.

Disney’s ‘The Nutcracker And The Four Realms’ Trailer Promises A Luxurious Christmas Spectacle

It wouldn’t be the holidays without a thousand different versions of The Nutcracker, but this year Disney hopes to create a new Christmas classic with their lavish adaptation The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.  The film is a rarity in that it is directed by both Lasse Hallstrom and Joe Johnston, the latter coming aboard to take over reshoots and post-production.  Under normal circumstances, recognizing two directors who aren’t a team just doesn’t happen, but Hallstrom  has been remarkably open to the idea, and we haven’t heard a single word about there being conflicts during production. Quite the contrary, actually.

Starring Mackenzie Foy as a young princess swept away into the Land of Flowers, Land of Sweets, and Land of Snowflakes, she must enter the dangerous fourth realm to defeat the evil Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) and her army of mice if she ever wants to get home. The film co-stars Morgan Freeman, Misty Copeland, Jack Whitehall, and Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms opens November 2nd.

Henry Cavill To Play Geralt Of Rivera In Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ Series

The only thing I know about The Witcher are the popular line of video games, but I now have some pretty serious interest in Netflix’s upcoming TV series, which has just found its witcher. Henry Cavill, the Man of Steel himself, has taken on the lead role, confirmed via his social media, of course.

Pretty cool because Cavill is a total nerd for The Witcher franchise, teasing his involvement with the below post just a few weeks ago…

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will be pulling from the Andrzej Sapkowski fantasy novels rather than the video games, and it was confirmed the series will be eight episodes long. Cavill will play Geralt of Rivera, the main protagonist of the Witcher games, novels, and short stories. He’s a genetically-enhanced monster slayer for hire, defending The Continent from vicious beasts.

The Witcher has been in the works for a while, but it looks to be racing full steam ahead now.

Rian Johnson To Direct Daniel Craig In Murder Mystery ‘Knives Out’

While he’s due to return to a galaxy far far away with a brand new trilogy, Rian Johnson is taking a small break from Star Wars after the split reaction to his controversial The Last Jedi. He’s going back to his roots, so to speak, with a mystery film that harkens back to his breakout debut with Brick, and fate has conspired to make Daniel Craig available to be his star.

With Bond 25 delayed for who knows how long while a new director is found, Craig has window of time to star in Johnson’s upcoming film, titled Knives Out. Deadline reports Johnson will attempt to sell the project while at TIFF, and having Craig on board should go a long way in making that happen. Not many details are known about it except that it will be a contemporary murder mystery done in a classic whodunit style in the Agatha Christie mode, since Deadline says Johnson “has been an Agatha Christie nut since his teens, sparking to her richly drawn characters and the twists and turns that drove her whodunits. For a decade, he has been framing in his mind how he would make his own murder mystery, and over the summer he scripted his contemporary version of the locked door mansion murder mystery.”

Johnson said on teaming up with Craig, “I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with [Craig] and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, Ram and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective. Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot.”

Shooting on Knives Out will begin in November so that both Johnson and Craig can get this done before they return to the realm of blockbuster franchises.

‘The Favourite’ Trailer: Emma Stone And Rachel Weisz Fight For The Queen’s Attentions

When the historical romance period is tackled with humor the results don’t often add up. For all my love for Sofia Coppla’s Marie Antoinette the film is a mixed bag tonally, and I much prefer Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship to Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, blasmphemous though some will probably take that. That only makes Yorgos Lanthimos’ raucous period comedy The Favourite all the more anticipated, as the director’s offbeat sense of humor looks to be a real treat with the performances by Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman.

Colman delivers a madcap take on Queen Anne, who is too busy eating pineapples and duck hunting to worry about impending war with France.  Weisz is her closest confidante Lady Sarah Churchill, whose position as the favorite is threatened by the arrival of her ambitious cousin, Baroness Abigail Basham, played by Stone.

Debuting last week in Venice, there are already some who see it as an early awards contender, especially for the trio of leading ladies.

The Favourite hits theaters on November 23rd and co-stars Joe Alwyn, Nicholas Hoult, and Mark Gatiss.

’22 July’ Trailer: Paul Greengrass Explores The 2011 Norway Terror Attacks

While Paul Greengrass will always be remembered as the architect of the Bourne films, it’s his work in crafting visceral, hard-hitting docudramas on real-life events that have earned him the greatest acclaim. Early on in his career this was seen in powerful films My Bloody Sunday and The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, before he then tackled American topics in United 93 and Captain Phillips. Now Greengrass is back and earning early awards buzz for 22 July, a film that documents one of the most heinous acts of terrorism in Norwegian history.

Based on the book One of Us by journalist  Åsne Seierstad, 22 July chronicles the 2011 Norway attacks, in which far-right terrorist Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people by first detonating a van bomb then gunning down members of a workers’ youth organization. Greengrass penned the script himself, and cast Anders Danielsen Lie (Oslo, 31 August) in the role of Brievik.
Here’s is Greengrass’ statement coinciding with the film’s Venice premiere:
Cinema embraces many forms and many subjects, but its theme is always our humanity. It can show us love and wonder, find truth and beauty in the smallest of private moments, or thrill and entertain us with magnificent spectacles of imagined worlds. But from time to time, cinema must also dare to look unflinchingly at the way the world is – how it is moving, where it is going, and how we can confront it. This is the reason I set out to tell the inspiring story of Norway’s response to the right wing terrorist attack of 22 July 2011.

Netflix will debut 22 July on October 10th.
