Some are calling Na Hong-jin’s cosmic creature feature Hope a sensation, others a disaster. Whatever the case, the reaction to the film out of Cannes is polarizing, to say the least. For the rest of us, we’ll have to wait until fall for NEON to drop it into theaters, when the distributor has hope of a Palme d’Or winner on its hands.
Written and directed by Na, Hope boasts a stacked international cast of Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender.
The story centers on the small town of Hope Harbor near the DMZ, where the local police chief and an officer and called in to investigate a strange beast that has attacked the village. Meanwhile, a group of hunters have set out to track the creature, only to face a deeper mystery that forces them all to face the unknown.
This is Na’s first film since 2016’s acclaimed horror, The Wailing, which also featured a small village thrown into chaos by a mysterious attack. The film won multiple awards, and it’s been a long time coming for Na’s comeback.
