‘Thrash’ Trailer: Phoebe Dynevor Tries Not To Become Shark Food During A Category 5 Hurricane

Shark movies have always had the hurdle of being compared to Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. Meeting an impossible standard hasn’t stopped them from getting made, mind you. Instead, filmmakers are constantly looking for new ways to up the ante beyond, y’know, becoming shark food.  In the case of Tommy Wirkola’s Thrash, there’s also the threat of a Category 5 hurricane.

Thrash stars Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou, residents of a coastal town hit with a Category 5 hurricane, not only destroys the town, it attracts hungry sharks looking for their next meal.

The film was directed and written by Wirkola, who is best known for the Dead Snow zombie flicks, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Violent Night. Wirkola’s strength is over-the-top gore, so it’ll be interesting to see how he operated on a somewhat lower register here. Adam McKay is aboard as a producer, as well.

Wirkola said in a statement: “I became obsessed with sharks after Jaws—and Jaws 2, which is an underrated movie. I spent a lot of my childhood obsessing over sharks and whatever movie was made about that subject. Fast forward to a world going off its rails when it comes to global warming and flash floods happening everywhere, and it dawned on me that this could be a great setting-off point for a movie, combining the idea of a disaster-movie with a shark-thriller.”

Thrash hits Netflix on April 10th!
