Box Office: ‘Mufasa’ Edges Out ‘Sonic 3’ To Start The New Year

  1. Mufasa: The Lion King– $23.8M/$168.6M With no major new releases to kick off the New Year, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King rebounded to #1 after two weeks of getting lapped by Sonic 3. Barry Jenkins’ prequel earned $23.8M in its third week of release and has $168M domestic, $476M globally.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3– $21.2M/$187.5M

After two weeks at the head of the pack, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was just barely edged out by Mufasa. The third film in Paramount’s franchise now has $336M globally, with the three films combining for over $1B globally, making it one of the studio’s best-performing brands.

3. Nosferatu– $13.2M/$69.4M

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is holding better than your typical horror movie in its second week, only falling 39% for $13.2M and $69M domestically. Globally it has just hit the $100M mark.

4. Moana 2– $12.3M/$425.1M

Disney’s Moana 2 keeps inching closer to the $1B club with $960M globally.  It looks like it may just fall short.

5. Wicked– $10.2M/$450.7M

6. A Complete Unknown– $8M/$41.6M

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown is riding the wave of award season buzz to a respectable $41M after two weeks.

7. Babygirl– $4.4M/$16.1M

8. Gladiator II– $2.6M/$168.8M

9. Homestead– $2.1M/$17.4M

10. The Fire Inside– $1.2M/$7.1M
