Rian Johnson is currently prepping his third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, and the second as part of his deal with Netflix. But is the filmmaker already looking to move on from the streamer and pursue new projects? That’s the rumor emerging from Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider report, so take it with a grain of salt.
The report says that Johnson might not return to Netflix following the release of Knives Out 3. It also says Johnson is developing an “original sci-fi project” that could be shopped around to other studios. Johnson has a previous relationship with Warner Bros. through his production banner, T-Street Productions, so that seems like a possible spot for it to land. Then again, one images that a bidding war could break out for a new original film from Johnson whose fans are extremely loyal.
If true, it would be a return to the sci-fi genre for Johnson. He previously directed the time-loop thriller Looper in 2012, and of course, he also directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017 and has been attached to an entire trilogy that may or may not ever happen.
Johnson’s next film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Story, hits Netflix in 2025.
