- Venom: The Last Dance (review)- $51M
It was a tale of two box offices for Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance, supposedly the final time we’ll see Tom Hardy suit up as Marvel’s symbiote antihero. Domestically, the $51M number is the weakest of the trilogy, with the previous films earning $80M and $92M respectively. But overseas it was a different story, where it earned $124M for a combined $175M worldwide, which doesn’t sound too shabby. Unfortunately, this continues a trend that Sony would like to break. Their corner of the Marvel cinematic universe with lower-tier Spider-Man related characters just isn’t performing well. Enough has been written about Madame Web and Morbius, but that Venom 3 continues the poorly-reviewed, low box office skid is a genuine problem as Kraven the Hunter nears.
2. Smile 2– $9.4M/$40.7M
In its second weekend, Smile 2 dropped 59% and was overtaken by Venom, an expected result for the horror sequel. Currently, the film has $83M worldwide and continues to get rave reviews for star Naomi Scott.
3. The Wild Robot– $6.5M/$111.3M
4. Conclave (review)- $6.5M
Coming in tied with The Wild Robot is Focus Features’ likely Best Picture contender, Conclave. The papacy thriller led by Ralph Fiennes and directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet On the Western Front) opened with $6.5M but looks to be headed for a long run driven by critical reviews (92% on Rotten Tomatoes) and Oscars buzz.
5. We Live in Time– $4.8M/$11.7M
6. Terrifier 3– $4.7M/$44.5M
7. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice– $3.2M/$288.7M
After eight weeks, Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘s $288M has passed Dune: Part Two as the studio’s highest-grossing domestic earner of the year. Worldwide, Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel has $438.8M.
8. Anora (review)- $867K/$1.6M
Neon is doing a slow rollout of Sean Baker’s sex worker rom-com Anora. Led by Oscar buzz for Baker and star Mikey Madison, the film earned $867K in its second week at just 34 locations for a whopping $25K per site average.
9. Piece by Piece– $721K/$8.8M
10. Transformers One– $720K/$57.9M
