A Promising ‘Happy Death Day 3’ Update From Director Christopher Landon

Good news for Happy Death Day fans? Count me in that group, as I’ve found Christopher Landon’s two horror-comedies (although the sequel leaned into sci-fi) to be some of the most enjoyable films in years, and both pretty successful critically and at the box office. But Landon hasn’t found any takers for a third film, despite has staunch efforts. Well, all hope isn’t lost, as Landon has provided a promising update to Comicbook.com.

Speaking with the site at New York Comic-Con over the weekend, Landon revealed that he has completed a treatment for Happy Death Day 3 and that the story’s scope is much larger this time…

“I could say that I wrote a treatment. I didn’t write the script, because I wouldn’t write a script unless it was a sure thing. Here’s the cool thing: It is a bigger movie, and it is not set on the same day as the previous two films. That’s the biggest spoiler I’ve put out there.”

The first two Happy Death Day films starred Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman, who is murdered over and over again on her birthday by a masked killer. The sequel found Tree trapped in a different time loop just one day later. The films combined for nearly $200M on a total $14M budget, so they were wildly successful even if the sequel was less so.

Landon’s made quite a mark on the genre in the time since, directing the horror-comedies Freaky and We Have a Ghost while writing or producing others. He was also briefly attached to direct Scream 7 before dropping out when its stars began exiting. Next up for Landon is another Blumhouse collab, Drop, which opens on April 11th and stars Meghann Fahey.

So let’s cross our fingers that Landon can find Happy Death Day 3 a home.
