Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, considered by many the greatest actor alive, hasn’t actually starred in anything since 2017’s Phantom Thread. During production of that film he began talking about it as his final movie, and he stuck to his word. But all it took was for his son to start making movies, and now Dad is ready to jump back in front of the camera.
Focus Features and Plan B have announced that Daniel Day-Lewis will come out of retirement to star in his son Ronan Day-Lewis’ feature directorial debut, Anemone. The film will also be co-written by Daniel and Ronan, making this the elder man’s first official screenwriting credit.
Anemone is said to explore “the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds.”
Ronan Day-Lewis is best known as an artist with many public exhibitions internationally. He directed the 2018 short film The Sheep and the Wolf.
Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green will co-star. Ben Fordesman, who did such a great job on Love Lies Bleeding earlier this year, is aboard as cinematographer.
Focus Features Chairman, Peter Kujawski said in a statement: “We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”
Daniel Day-Lewis won Academy Awards for his performances in There Will Be Blood, Lincoln, and My Left Foot. He has received acclaim for other roles in Gangs of New York, The Last of the Mohicans, A Room with a View, and many more.
