Hollywood has never been known to miss out on a hot trend, and with Formula One racing more popular now than it’s been in decades, the time is right for the racing drama F1. With Joseph Kosinski still soaring from directing Top Gun: Maverick, and Brad Pitt behind the wheel, it’s easy to see why so many have their sights set on the film’s arrival in 2025.
While nearly a year away from racing into theaters, the first footage from F1 is here, having debuted during the weekend’s British Grand Prix. The film stars Pitt as racer Sonny Hayes, who in the ’90s was forced to retire after a terrible accident. After training in other racing disciplines, he is recruited by an old friend to return to Formula One to work with a rookie driver and turn him into a champion as part of the fictional APXGP team.
Damson Idris plays rookie prodigy Joshua “Noah” Pearce, and he’s joined in the cast by Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia and Samson Kayo.
The Apple film has a script by Oscar-nominated Top Gun: Maverick writer Ehren Kruger. Rumors are that Kosinski’s production has blown up to over $300M in budget, meaning Apple and Warner Bros. will need it to be a huge hit just to break even.
F1 opens in theaters on June 27th 2025.
