It’s always a good idea to expect the unexpected when going into a Yorgos Lanthimos film. The director of Poor Things, The Lobster, The Favourite, and more has never been known to follow a common path with his storytelling. And in the case of his latest, Kinds of Kindness, that trend continues as it’s a triptych in which each star plays multiple roles.
Lanthimos reteams with his muse, Emma Stone, who co-stars with Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer. Lanthimos directed the movie and co-wrote the script with Efthimis Filippou.
Here’s the synopsis: KINDS OF KINDNESS is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
Reviews have been strong following its premiere at Cannes, with the film currently holding an 81% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kinds of Kindness opens in theaters on June 21st so we won’t have to wait long.
