Colin Farrell investigates the seedy and weird side of Hollywood in the new Apple TV+ crime series, Sugar. Apple revealed a trailer for the new show today, revealing the Oscar-nominated Farrell as private investigator John Sugar who is hired to locate the missing granddaughter of a big-shot Hollywood producer.
Here’s the synopsis: Starring and executive produced by Farrell, “Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award-nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
This is no ordinary detective series, though. Creator and writer Mark Protosevich is taking a genre-bending approach to the private detective story, and has brought on the perfect director to make that vision come true. Fernando Meirelles, the director behind City of God, Children of Men, The Constant Gardener, and The Two Popes, directs all eight episodes. He’s a filmmaker who has proven capable of tackling just about every genre while exploring larger-than-life subjects.
Also starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, Dennis Boutsikaris, Alex Hernandez, Lindsay Pulsipher, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, and Sydney Chandler, Sugar debuts with the first two episodes on Apple TV+ on April 5th.
