“Since the beginning of time. Since the first little girl ever existed. There have been…dolls.”
Well, I guess if someone is going to find a way to mix Barbie with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, it’d be Greta Gerwig. I don’t think anyone quite knew what to expect when Gerwig, an indie stalwart with two beloved films, Lady Bird and Little Women, under her directorial belt, took on a movie about the iconic doll. Turns out, what we’re getting is a go-for-broke, totally out-there subversive comedy that, in a way, mirrors the tone of her partner and co-writer Noah Baumbach’s recent film, White Noise. Weird, huh?
With Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starring as Barbie and Ken, Gerwig’s Barbie looks totally wild and a ton of fun. The teaser pokes fun at the Barbie doll’s dominant place in history, essentially replacing all other dolls in the hearts of little girls everywhere.
Joining Robbie and Gosling in the cast is a massive ensemble, some of which are playing other versions of Barbie and Ken. America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Ncuti Gatwa, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, and Alexandra Shipp co-star, with Will Ferrell as the CEO of Mattel.
Barbie opens in theaters on July 21st 2023. If this wasn’t already high on your list of anticipated movies for next year, this teaser might change that. Sure did for me!
