Let’s just be real; Sony is drunkenly throwing darts when it comes to their Spider-Man spinoff movies. It must be tough not actually being able to use Spidey, but all of the characters that wouldn’t be popular without him. So far, only Venom has amounted to much, while the recent Morbius was…well, meme-worthy terrible. Other films on the slate sound like longshots…I mean, Kraven? Seriously? But this next one, El Muerto, could be a smash because it features international superstar Bad Bunny. And now that film has a director, too.
According to TheWrap, Jonás Cuarón will direct Bad Bunny in Sony’s El Muerto movie. The character, a super-powered Luchadore with a mystical mask, has a limited amount of backstory in Marvel Comics. So basically writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who also penned the Blue Beetle movie, will be able to take the character in any number of directions.
You probably know Jonás Cuarón at this point. He’s the son of acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, and co-wrote his father’s hit movie Gravity. He also directed the 2015 border thriller Desierto, which earned its share of accolades.
El Muerto is set to open on January 12th 2024.
