Of the 10,000 stories that came out of Disney’s investor conference this one must be the most odd, but at the same time kind of on-brand. James Gunn, one of my favorite working filmmakers, poster on twitter the announcement for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The tweet was accompanied with the adorable note that Gunn had been bugging Kevin Feige for the chance to do this for years, I would have loved to sit in on one of those discussions. Hey, if anyone should do a Holiday special, it’s the Guardians. Just imagine Peter Quill sitting around explaining all of the holiday traditions to the team, the questions Drax and Mantis would have, and Rocket’s cynical take on the whole thing, all while they decorate their very own Christmas tree, Groot! We’ve got some time before we’ll get to see this in all it’s glory, the special is set to debut Christmas 2022, just before the release of The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023. Am I the only one that sees those dates and imagines it as decades in the future and not just 2-3 short years away? Damn I’m old.
Even seeing this here makes me laugh. One of my favorite stories ever, which I have bugged @Kevfeige endlessly about over the years. I can’t believe we’re actually doing this. And, yes, I unironically loved the Star Wars Holiday Special as a kid. pic.twitter.com/JjymrARoV7
