Casting on Marvel’s X-Men movie is picking up, with the recent news that Samara Weaving will play Emma Frost. While nobody else has been confirmed yet, despite some other sites claiming such, rumors continue to surface about who might be signed next. If they’re all true, it’ll continue the tradition of the X-Men movies having the best ensembles of any superhero franchise.
So this rumor has been going around for a bit, and has picked up steam thanks to scooper Jeff Sneider. He says Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus) and Odessa A’zion (Marty Supreme) are up for the role of Rogue, although Marvel’s interest seems to be leaning towards A’zion. They add that Spaeny has really lobbied hard for it. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play the X-Men’s resident Southern Belle and mutant powerhouse? Rogue was previously played by Anna Paquin in four X-Men films for 20th Century Fox.
Meanwhile, Obsession breakout Inde Navarrette has a wealth of opportunities ahead of her after that film’s $400M success and buzz about Oscar nominations. In a recent interview with Variety, Navarrette admitted she’s had a meeting with Marvel and X-Men director Jake Schreier about playing Mystique. The shapeshifting villain was previously played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence, memorably so in both cases. Whoever plays her next will have big shoes to fill, but Navarrette showed how easily she can shift gears emotionally, from calm to psychotic, at the drop of a hat. Mystique is the same way; on your side one second, stabbing you in the back the next.
With rumors also circulating that Charles Melton (Beef) is up for playing Cyclops, X-Men could have an incredible cast of red-hot stars: Weaving, Spaeny or Azion, Navarrette, Melton, and one more who I won’t spoil just in case there are some stragglers to the Spider-Man party.
