I’m seeing a method to Marvel’s madness when casting its upcoming X-Men movie directed by Jake Schreier. The only official casting we’ve got so far include Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and presumably Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Now another character deeply connected to them both has been set, as Deadline reports Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott “Cyclops” Summers.
According to the report, Connor was one of many who tested in front of Schreier and Marvel chief Kevin Feige. Others interviewed during the July 4th holiday so we might see some more casting news in the coming days.
Connor’s biggest stateside roles have been in voicing The Wild Robot, Alex Garland’s Warfare, and the hit Netflix series Heartstopper, for which he’ll return for the movie sequel Heartstopper Forever. He has also landed a role in Garland’s Elden Ring movie for A24, and that’s going to be huge.
Cyclops is maybe the most important figure in the history of the X-Men. Professor Xavier’s first and favorite “son”, Scott Summers has led the team through most of its incarnations. He’s known for his concussive force blasts from his eyes (they aren’t heat rays, folks! comic book writers get it wrong all the time), and for the red ruby quartz glasses he must wear to contain the powerful mutant ability. He has also been romantically connected to both Emma Frost and Jean Grey, making him the luckiest Boy Scout in history. Cyclops is also the father of Nathan “Cable” Summers and the brother to Alex “Havok” Summers, so the Summers bloodline runs deep.
Cyclops has been played memorably by James Marsden, who will also return for Avengers: Doomsday, and also by Tye Sheridan…less memorably.
It’s my guess that we’ve learned about these three roles first for a reason, and now I expect we’ll start seeing some of the other important X-Men roles cast.
