I hope you’re not sick of Moana yet, because Disney isn’t letting that ship sail away any time soon. With the live-action remake hitting theaters this week, star Dwayne Johnson, who plays the demigod Maui in every film so far, says that Moana 3 is already in the works.
Johnson was in Rio de Janiero hyping this week’s Moana, and told People “Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes.” He added that Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller will return to write the script.
This shouldn’t shock anyone. The original Moana in 2016 starring Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho was huge, earning nearly $700M and spawning a multimedia franchise that includes theme park attractions. The animated sequel released in 2024 did even better, surpassing $1B at the box office after it was cobbled together from the spare parts of a Disney+ series.
It’s worth noting that analyst tracking for this week’s live-action Moana is kinda soft, so it might be that fans only want to see this story told through animation. We’ll find out soon enough.
As for Moana 3, we’re probably a long way from any concrete details. One thing is for sure, and it’s Johnson returning as the cocky, musclebound Maui.
